home of Old Town Alexandria's original sports bar and favorite pizza.
The owners, Bryan (Bugsy) and Lindy Watson take great pride in being part
of the Old Towne restaurant scene and have been operating at this location
since 1983.
6 Months after opening Armand's Chicago Pizzeria (Renamed Bugsy's in 1998) at 111 King St in Alexandria Virigina, Bryan and Lindy Watson opened the upstairs as a sports bar.Originally named the Penalty Box, it was an immediate hit and a natural extension to the pizzeria as one could have the same delicious pizza while watching sporting events on the many tv's in the space and being hosted by Bryan Watson. The Caps practiced in Mt. Vernon then, and the bar became a regular hangout for the players and sports fans alike, the unique bar became an anchor for hockey in the Alexandria area. The Washington Capitals organization was and is still very supportive of the bar.
As a player in the National Hockey League for 17 years, the sports bar is a natural choice for Bryan. He began his career as a right defenseman for the Montral Canadians in 1962 and found his way to the Washington Capitals in 1976, retiring in 1979. Before coming to Washington, Bugsy spent 5 1/2 seasons with the Pittsburgh Penguins and 5 seasons with the Detroit Red Wings. Bugsy was a fierce competitor on the ice and led the league in penalty minutes for several years. Also a renowned prankster, Watson got the nickname Bugsy from teammates Gordie Howe and Andy Bathgate in 1966 during the famous semi final Stanley Cup series when he drove both the opposition and his own teammates insane for very different reasons!
Bryan says, "We are crazy about hockey here but we're equally crazy about all sports. The bar is a major draw for baseball and NFL fans, college alumni for alma mater games, World Cup Soccer, Olympics and more".
At Bugsy's, Bryan strongly believes that a dedicated staff working productively and happily is the only way to bring the best results to his customers. In addition, Bryan and Lindy are especially proud of their pledge to use only the highest quality, and freshest ingredients in all their dishes. Each meal is prepared on premises daily. This committment to excellence allows them to serve delicious and unique pizzas, pasta dishes, burgers, specialty sandwiches and salads!
The unique bar filled with photos of memorabilia from all sports, and is often compared to the famous tv bar "Cheers". Its' superb bartenders, friendly and comfortable atmosphere make it a fun place to catch up with old friends or make new ones. Bryan and Lindy hope you have a great time, a delicious meal and lots of fun browsing through their prized collection of sports memorabilia on the wall upstairs at Bugsy's Sports Bar!
